Traralgon’s Royal Exchange Hotel has again topped the state’s hotels in fundraising for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.

More than $79,000 was raised over the last 12 months, including Friday’s Community Family Fun Day and $23,000 from motorists at the Princes Highway-Breed Street traffic lights last Thursday and Friday.

Roy Arnold from the REH Cork Club says public support increases from year to year.

"We've been the top country fundraising hotel for something like 30 years, which we won again by a country mile. We're also the major fundraiser for ALL the hotels for the last five years, including the metropolitan hotels, and this year we've done it for the sixth year in a row."

Roy says the result is thanks to the generosity of local people all year long.

"Everybody, from those who come and buy a raffle ticket, to those who help us on the Family Fun Day, to those who helped us on the traffic lights, those who man the barbecues through the year for us and help us at the craft market... all of those things add up to get that total."

More than 800 motorhomes are in Sale for the Campervan and Motorhome Club's Easter Rally which commences today.

Retirees and motorhome enthusiasts have gathered at the Sale showgrounds, bringing with them a million dollar boost to the local economy.

Rally manager Colin Gard says they have come from all across Australia.

"Some are coming from Cairns and a lot of people have travelled from Western Australia where our last rally was held in October and they've been making their way back across.

"We will have entertainment every night, and ladies make rugs which will be ultimately donated to nutsing homes around Gippsland and we have a big trade show on all week.

"Our Open Day is on Monday and the public is invited to come and talk to people about motorhomes."

The Air Force Roulettes will salute rally visitors with a 10 minute formation aerobatic display over the showgrounds.

Six PC9 aircraft will reach speeds up to 550 kilometres per hour, at just 3 metres apart, at around 11.45am tomorrow.

The Roulettes are based at the East Sale RAAF base.

It has been recommended that Latrobe City be reduced from nine wards to four larger ones, most with multiple councilors.

The Victorian Electoral Commission has released its final review into Latrobe City Council, ordered by the state government because of concerns that some residents aren't adequately represented.

The report recommends four wards with nine councilors.

An East Ward with four councilors includes Traralgon;

Morwell is included in a Central Ward with two councilors;

Moe and Newborough are in a West Ward, also with two councilors;

And there'd be one councilor in a South Ward that includes Churchill and Boolarra.

The report, which was compiled after extensive public consultation, now goes to Local Government Minister Jeanette Powell for her approval.

Moving the sustainability festival Earth Fest from Stratford to Sale this year seems to have paid off with many first time visitors. Read More

Monday 26/3/12

Moving the sustainability festival Earth Fest from Stratford to Sale this year seems to have paid off with many people visiting for the first time.

Sandy Morrison from the Wellington Sustainability Group says there also seemed to be increased interest due to current issues in the region like coal seam gas exploration and the state government's plans for marketing our brown coal.

"There wasn't just event patrons getting information but stallholders were also learning from each other.

"It's just been so valuable having that knowledge exchange and raising people's awareness of some really key issues that are in the district right now in terms of different mining propositions and so on."

Environment group Friends of the Earth says locking the Latrobe Valley into a brown coal strategy for short-term economic benefits is short-sighted by the state government.

Speaking at Earth Fest, the group's coal spokesman Sean Murray said the short-term gain would be a long-term liability.

"If the government had a clear, forward-thinking agenda, they would be investing heavily in renewable energy which is rapidly being rolled out around the world and increasing between 30% and 50% a year.

"We'd be getting our slice of that pie, rather than something that's a deadend road"

Also at Earth Fest, Wellington Shire Council released its environmental strategy through to 2015.

The document was finalised after wide community consultation and Cr Beth Ripper says it will guide council policies and decision-making.

"The strategy provides for a framework for the Council to look at its own practices, like doing audits on Council facilities so that we know what the baseline is and we can track changes over time.

"So those changes can be both impacts on the environment but also impacts on our financial position."

Earth Fest also had a Youth Space with live music and information from groups including So What, Awesome, Catholic College Sale's social justice group and the Wellington Shire Youth Council.
