South Gippsland Shire councillors dismissed by government

The sacked mayor of South Gippsland Shire Council, Don Hill, says he is disappointed with the dismissal of councillors by the state government.

Councillors will be replaced by an interim administrator after a Commission of Inquiry investigated allegations of more than a year of bullying, misconduct and bad governance.

Six councillors have resigned in that period.

Cr Hill says he strongly contests the assertions of the Commission that there has been a failure of governance and leadership.

However ratepayers have generally welcomed the move, saying the current council was dysfunctional.

A Bill to dismiss the South Gippsland Shire Council has passed the lower house of Parliament.

An administrator will be appointed while a full panel is established.
